Langerie, Lingre, Lingerine – How YOU Might be Doing it all Wrong

I say Langerie because over the years I’ve met many girls and for some reason it always seems to come up. Lingerie habits. I’ve heard the good, the bad and the down right dirty. Keep your pretties safe girls, they are to be treasured not tortured. There are so many things I’ve heard and seen but here are a few of the essentials you should know to make sure you’re getting it right. Flaunting Lingerie, not langerie.

[It’s worth a ponder ladies]

Size matters…Obviously

There is absolutely no point going into any store, whether it’s lingerie OR clothing, as a size 12 and buying an 8. (It is true that most stores do not have accurate sizes, I get that. My point is do not buy something that is clearly too small. It is not attractive, you look like a sausage with elastic bands around you. That or I can clearly see your hoo ha!) I used to work in an adorable boutique called Alannah Hill and it would frustrate me so very much when a women with bombshell curves who’s clearly a size 10/12 would come in asking for a size 6….AND THEN SQUEEZE IN AND PURCHASE IT! I know what you’re thinking, a little bit of pain for a stunning gown right? Wrong! Don’t worry I’m not exactly laid back when it comes to dressing myself, but things should at the least fit. To make what looks good, look good and to hide the bits that you don’t want to show as much. This is the exact same for lingerie. A BRA SHOULD NOT HURT! If your bra stabs and digs, you need a new bra. Get fitted. Know your size. Your real size. Most girls are not a so called size 12 all around. I am a size 8 waist, 12 bust and 10 hips. It’s all over the shop. You need to make sure things fit. No one likes saggy panties.

For God’s sake, NO WASHING MACHINES

Lingerie and washing machines, nah uh. I don’t think so. A washing machine is like a big white evil monster just creeping around your laundry waiting to chew your prettiest knickers to bits. I’m definitely not saying you shouldn’t wash your lingerie, please do not take that the wrong way. Although it has been said that you can wash your dedicates in the washing machine, I still wouldn’t. If you have padded items or delicate lace you don’t want that spinning around really fast for 1/2 an hour. A simple hand-wash is always best.

No, it’s not a myth. You NEED to wash your bras.

It’s pretty self explanatory. I’ve heard while traveling and back home that some people find this very strange to wash your bra frequently. I found this very odd. Despite them not looking like it very often, bras can get filthy and smelly. You really don’t want this.

Don’t go cheap

One expensive piece or 8 cheap ones. Hmmm… with lingerie, it’s just one of those things where you really don’t want the 8 cheap ones and it’s worth forking out a little extra for quality and style. There are some shockers out there, eBay is full of them. The price is often reflected in the quality particularly with the cheaper pieces. I’m certainly not saying that because it’s expensive it’s good (because this is not the case with some brands) but you tend to get better quality fabrics as well as nicer better suited styles in the medium to high price range.

Stay ups are the devil

I’m not even exaggerating. Stay ups are cheap and often they look cheap. It has annoyed me time and time again seeing the launch of a new lingerie line and the models are dressed in these new lovely lacy pieces. Then you look down and they’re wearing this pair of cheap stay ups which have horrible clear elastic at the top and fall down when you walk. If you have any form of thigh jelly, they will cut in and look horrible. If you don’t have thigh jelly they’ll just sit above your knees all night, enjoying the view. I cannot recommend more to get yourself a good quality suspender belt. Not only do they keep your stockings up, but they’ll straighten your seams. It’s a few extra bucks but they last for eternity. I’ve had mine from the Von Follies range for two years now, and it’s still going strong.

Victoria’s Secret can (sometimes) really suck, they are not the be all end all!

You’ll all soon hear all about my view of Victoria’s Secret. I’m not a fan and it’s not why you think. It’s not because I’ve heard all the hoo haa about their sexist racist ways. Nor is it because I’ve had a bad experience with the brand personally. To be honest I think they’ve made a great brand for themselves. I am not a fan because that’s all they are, a brand. They’re like McDonald’s. EXTREMELY well marketed crap. To the point where people can’t even see it. There are a few pieces (and I really mean a few) that I have fancied over the years, but they aren’t selling anything exciting, new or even slightly stylish (of course this is a matter of opinion, each to their own). So the question is do you want to be spending your hard earned cash on McDonald’s or eating a delicious croissant in Paris? It’s your choice.

‘Lingerie, not meant for everyone’ – This is a lie.

Lingerie is meant for all. You can check out my other article on the impact burlesque has had on fuller figure lingerie. It’s now available in more shapes and sizes than ever before. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise. It doesn’t matter what size, demographic, ethnicity, you could have two heads and it wouldn’t mater. There is something out there for you.

Lingerie should NEVER be a quick pick up

3 pack pick up at the supermarket…this is just not how you should buy underwear. We’re not shopping for eggs people! Underwear and bras need to be picked out AND tried on. Most people fall into a trap when they see these 3 packs or ‘buy 5 for $20′. Two they like that fit, and 3 that are okay and don’t fit that great. It’s great to find bargains but you still want to be getting quality that fits. A great piece can last you ages and is definitely worth the extra pennies.
